When your birth plan takes a detour…

Birth Stories

They say you have your plan A when you birth but be open to B,C,D. Well, our plan took a detour but what remained was that sense of support and deep trust that traveled with us to John Hunter Hospital in an ambulance!

It’s hard to believe that this time last week I was in the middle of the throes of labor.

Rather than diving head first in on our birth story, this instead is a huge appreciation post for my team. They say as mums we birth our own babies, but honestly it would not have been everything it was without the people that surrounded us.

Specifically my husband Brian Haller – you did not leave my side for a second, every breath we breathed together, every pain you helped me through and the deep love and support remained unwavering and so fully encompassing. You are so appreciated and valued! And boy are you the greatest daddy too!

To start.. A huge shout out to Christine Marsh who set us up for success by navigating our entrance and acceptance into the Belmont Birthing Centre on her last day before retiring. Not just this amazing gift but your support and encouragement along the way has meant so much!

From the moment we connected with Belmont Birthing Centre Birthing Centre, Belmont Hospital Friends of Belmont Birthing our journey has been forever changed! And that’s hugely because we were so beyond blessed to have the amazing Erin Devetak as our midwife. Erin is like this magical human that makes you feel instantly calm, connected and supported.

From day one, moment one we knew we were in great hands and this has only proven to be even greater than we expected. Erin went above and beyond.. shifts changed, but my team stayed present as support well beyond.

They say you have your plan A when you birth but be open to B,C,D. Well, our plan took a detour but what remained was that sense of support and deep trust that traveled with us to John Hunter Hospital in an ambulance!

Meeting us at a John Hunter, was our Calm Birth instructor, Maja Batista, who was ready to take on the challenge – talk about stars aligning! She did everything in her power along with Erin to still maintain the essence of our birth plan. I felt so supported, respected and safe!

From surgery to recovery and a few days at the John Hunter Hospital … I can not speak more highly of everyone we encountered.

And the moment our lil ray of sunshine was placed on my chest… I’d endure it all again in a heartbeat for our Skye!

The people that have come into our lives through this experience will be treasured in our hearts forever! Everyone at Belmont, our student intern Zoë and our beautiful magical Erin, you are appreciated beyond words.

Birthing isn’t easy, but I feel so empowered, strong and grateful. I felt like I could conquer goals before but now I’m unstoppable.. I’m blessed with the most perfect little girl and our new chapter as a family of 3 is unfolding!

Best days ever! Your daddy and mummy love you Skye Evie, we don’t want to miss a second!

Ps. She is never traveling to live on the other side of the globe without us (sorry mum n dad – now I get it)
