Kylie has been working as a midwife since 2017. Prior to becoming a midwife she was a paediatric nurse with over 20 years experience. She has worked in all areas of midwifery but has now chosen to work in the Labour Ward as she loves supporting women and their partners in labour and experiencing the joy of birth.
“I feel it is a privilege to be part of something so beautiful, life changing and transformational. I simply love my work.
” Labour and birth is remarkably unique and different for each woman. The more women I looked after in labour I began to notice that women who had attended the Calmbirth course were knowledgeable, prepared, calm, confident and controlled. They felt powerful and strong. They trusted their bodies to know what to do. Their partners knew what to do. They were prepared for all possibilities. I want more women to feel prepared for labour and birth so decided to become a Calmbirth Educator.
“I look forward to sharing my skills and knowledge with more women and their partners in my role as a Calmbirth Educator. I divide my time between the inner west of Sydney and the beautiful Upper Hunter and am available for private classes in your own home or a venue that suits you in both areas.”
My Name is…Kylie Furness.
I work at…Delivery Ward in one of Sydney’s largest maternity hospitals.
My life in five words…Happy, rewarding, full of love.
The best thing about where I live is…a sense of community, a village atmosphere but close to the city.
What I do to relax when I’m not working…I love live music, good films, swimming in the ocean, reading, catching up with family and friends and travelling.
I can’t live without…my beautiful family and friends.
The person or traits I most admire is…I admire anyone who is passionate about what they do and who has the confidence to go out on a limb and try something different.
What I love most about being a Calmbirth Educator…giving women/couples the tools to feel empowered and knowledgeable about birth and to help them achieve the birth they want.
The 3 essential things you need to take with you into labour are…a good playlist, a sense of humour and feeling confident and empowered.
My most memorable moment at as Calmbirth® educator…I recently looked after a woman who did the Calmbirth course during her first pregnancy and did the refresher course for this pregnancy. She was so excited when I told her I was doing the course to become a Calmbirth educator. I received a beautiful gift and card from her. She wrote “…Thank you for all your help and guidance during the birth of little baby … You were so cool, calm and collected and helped us to have the birth we wanted, and we trusted you the whole way, so thank you. Good luck with your Calmbirth training, you will be a wonderful educator.”
Your favourite quote… “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – Nelson Mandela
If you had to describe how seeing a baby being born makes you feel….It’s like a miracle every time I experience it. It’s a privilege to be part of a birth of a baby and I’m so lucky to experience it every day I go to work.
