Karen Williams is a midwife and Calmbirth Educator who offers the Calmbirth program to pregnant couples in the Yass Valley, Canberra and surrounding districts. Karen loves supporting pregnant couples to prepare for the arrival of their baby and for the early parenting period, she says “being a part of a couples journey in birth and early parenting is a great privilege and one that I relish!”
As a midwife, the most important lesson I’ve learned from expectant couples is that being prepared boils down to feeling that you have the knowledge and confidence to create the best birth for you and your baby, no matter where you are or what happens on the day.
Preparedness is not just about setting up your home and your car or being shown the ins and outs of how or where you have chosen to birth but it’s also about feeling prepared on an emotional and psychological level and feeling connected as a couple and ultimately as a family.
My Name is…Karen Williams.
I work at…Public maternity services in the ACT and on my sheep farm.
My life in five words…simplicity, country, family, learning, art.
The best thing about where I live is…it’s country.
What I do to relax when I’m not working…take time to day dream or ride my horse.
I can’t live without… my rose water spray mist and a nice cup of tea.
The person I most admire is….other than my Mum, there are two that come to mind. Kate Bush, because she is uncompromisingly herself and Dame Enid Lyons for her tenacity.
What I love most about being a Calmbirth Educator…It is such a privilege to work with people who are about to step into the most amazing roles of their lives and inspire them to realise their own potential to do so confidently.
If I had to describe my own birth experiences in 3 words…unpredictable, transforming and elation!
The 3 essential things you need to take with you into labour are…a calm mind, a supportive companion and a midwife.
My most memorable moment at as Calmbirth® educator…The first time I received a phone call from a couple to say thank-you and describe how the Calmbirth Program helped them achieve the birth they wanted.
A favourite quote…”We change the world through our actions not our opinions{” – Paulo Coelho
Seeing a baby being born makes me feel…As though I am in exactly the right place at exactly the right time – it’s a cosmic connection, indescribable and wondrous.
