Getting to know Calmbirth Educator Alana Hurst

Educators

Alana Hurst has been a Midwife for 15 years and has now also become a Calmbirth Educator. What some of you may not know, or you may even recognise her as being our poster girl or the face for Calmbirth’s, There’s no birth like a Calmbirth campaign which features her very own birth of her daughter Poppy.

“I love my job and the incredible women, families, midwives and other health professionals I have the pleasure to work with. I have always loved sharing birth stories and helping prepare women and their families for bringing a baby in to their lives. I attended a Clambirth session when I was pregnant and I just loved everything about the course and couldn’t wait to become a facilitator. I am a mother to four children and in my spare time I am also a wedding celebrant and love nothing more than going for a run or a swim or reading a good book.”

My name is…Alana Hurst.

I work at…Sutherland Hospital as a Registered Midwife and I am also a wedding celebrant.

My life in five words…Crazy, busy, full, messy, love!

The best thing I love about where I live is…the people I get to live with 🙂 But I am a true Sydney lover.

What I do to relax when I’m not working is…I love reading, I always have a book on the go,  running or swimming and then always a hot bath with a glass of wine.

I can’t live without...Books, my girlfriends, my family, my partner Rich and my 4 children.

The person or traits I most admire is… My mother – also a nurse/midwife, mother to 5, just someone I love so much.

What I love most about being a Calmbirth Educator is...Sharing birth stories and helping normalise birth, seeing the moment that couples realise birth is manageable, and seeing partners get a new found confidence that they have a role in birth.

If I had to describe my own birth stories they would be….incredible, challenging, empowering.

The three essential things you need to take with you into labour are…a positive mindset, tools for managing labour, a great support team.

My most memorable moment as a Calmbirth Educator so far is...finishing my first class!

If you had to describe how seeing a baby being born makes you feel…I will never get over the amazement of seeing a baby being born, each time I feel priviledged to witness that.

You can book a Calmbirth course with Alana at the Sutherland Hospital.
